Mr. Sule Bichi, Managing Director, Red Star Express Plc today said that primary and grassroots education remained Nigeria’s catalyst for overall economic growth and long term improvement of life.

Bichi disclosed this in Lagos while presenting scholarship awards to students from Unity Grammar School and Mafoluku Grammar School, as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

Speaking on behalf of other recipients at the 2015 edition of the award of scholarship, Master Adebayo Mark, an SS1 student of Unity Grammar School, Oshodi commended the company for its commitment to the scholarship programme which, in no small amount, has eased some of the burden shouldered by their parents, especially regarding their educational needs.

The Managing Director however explained that the purpose of the scholarship is to encourage young and brilliant Nigerian students to aim for excellence.

To ensure continuity, he implored the beneficiaries to demonstrate continuous academic excellence throughout the duration of the scholarship; they must show exemplary character and integrity. He further encouraged other students to strive to be a Red Star Scholar as there is an opportunity for this every year.

The scholars from indigent homes and public schools were chosen based on presented evidence of demonstrated academic excellence through their previous results and a scholarship examination conducted by University of Lagos Consult.

He noted that the gesture was in accordance with the company’s philosophy of Corporate Social Responsibility which mandates the company to contribute to the development of the society. Red Star Express appropriates a percentage of its annual profit after tax towards the running of the “Red Star Foundation”.
