Handball Championship: Nigeria beat Zambia 35-26, to battle Algeria for fifth place
The national under-20 women handball team on Thursday defeated Zambia 35-26 in a classification game at the ongoing 28th Africa Women Junior Handball Championship in Conakry, Guinea.
Our correspondent reports that the Nigerian team missed the chance to participate at the World Cup in Slovenia by suffering defeats in their first two matches.
These were against Tunisia and hosts Guinea.
Nigeria on Tuesday then defeated Algeria 34-21 in their third and last Group A match, a victory which did not prevent them from falling into the classification phase.
The Nigerian side entered the match against Zambia with vigour and ran riot to end the first half 20-8.
They continued with the same momentum in the second half to win the match 35-26 in spite of a late surge from the Zambians.
Our correspondent reports that Nigeria will now take on Algeria to fight for fifth place after the North Africans defeated Burkina Faso 28-17 in a pulsating classification match.
The 2022 International Handball Federation (IHF) Women’s Youth World Championship will be the event’s 23rd edition and will be held in Slovenia from June 22 to July 3.
It was reported that the African championship in Conakry which started on Feb. 19 is expected to end on Saturday.
